SUGAR FREIGHT
RAILWAYS IN COMPETITION WITH STEAMSHIP LINES WELLINGTON, Thursday. Referring to a protest made in Wanganui concerning the reduction in sugar freights between Auckland and Wanganui, the General Manager of Railways, Mr. P. G. Roussell, said the Railway Department had a legitimate competitive sugar trade with the Northern Steamship company between the two ports, just as it had a competitive rate between Auckland I and Whangarei and other ports on the East Coast. If the Railway Department could not get ordinary rates, it was forced to reduce the charge. The department had had to introduce a competitive rate between Auckland and Whangarei in order to hold a proportion of the traffic, Mr. Roussell said. However the rate did not apply to sugar in ton lots, but in ten ton lots. The department could get ten tons on a four wheel wagon, and that was by no means a non-payable load as the freight came to £18/15/-.
