INDIGNATION EXPREfifiEb AT NEW PLYMOUTH MEETING THE STAND-DOWN WEEK

NEW PLYMOUTH, Friday. The position of the unemployed in provincial centres during the standdown week, was described as desperata at a meeting of representatives of every importanf organisatlbri in New Plymouth, ealled urg'ently by the Mayor. The previous night and yesterday's canvas of the town met with a response of £l'O0 for the p'enniless met over the week-end, It was explained that the poW€F^"~*^ ' of the hospital board to grarit rfelief to able-bodied men during the Standp down week, had been taken away, afi'd outside the four chief centres, the_ Un employment Board had made no provision for relief during the sthiiddown period. During that time, many familips were in desperate straits. The Speakers vigorously condemned the "aetioir of the Unempioyment Board in discriminating in favour of the four cities. Strongly worded resolutiefis were passed, calling upon the Government, either to eliminate the stand-down week in New Plymoiith, or to withdraw its opposition to hospital board.s grantihg relief tq ablhbodied men during that Jperiod. By the afternoon over £2d0 had been subscribed by the citizens.
