UNCLE ASPHYXIATED WHEN TRYING TO RESCUE NEPHEW. ACCIDENT TO WELL-BORERS.

WANGANUI, Thursday. One man is dead and another in a critical condition as a result of being overcome by gas fumes whiie engaged in well-boring on a farni at Matarawa, nine miles from the city, this morning. •Particulafs are very meagre, but it appears that a young man named Johnston was overcome on descending. His uricle, also named Johnston, went to the rescue, but was asphyxiated immediately. A third man was lowered, but on reaching the bottom was overcome, and when hauled to the surface was unconscious and black in the face. He remembered nothing. The Wanganui Fire Brigade rushed to the scene on hearing of the accident. Snperintendent Williams, with a smoke mask, descended, and both the Johnstons were hauled to the sur-
face. One, the'uncle, was dead, and the other is in a critical condition.
