ccuncil meeting INCREASED RATE SUBSIDY NOT CONSIDERED JUSTIFIABLE. mamaku petition refused. A letter from the Commissioner of Transport enclosing a copy of a letter sent to the Rotorua Borough Council in regard to the control of traffic inspeetion of vehicles was considered by the Rotorua County Council at a meeting yesterday, and it was decided on the motion of the cliairman, Mr. H. P. Ford, that the commissioner he advised that the county couneil was an independent body, and that it theiefove be given the opportunity to inake a decision as to the advisability of any change in control before any definite change was madq. He pomted out that in every district ihe eonditions of control necessarily varied, and that while it had every wish to co-operate with the department, he considered that the council should be consulted before any change was made. Considering a request from the Matapuna County Council for suppprt in an applicarion to increase the subsidy on rates from 12£ per cent. to 30 per cent., Cr. A. L. Keith considered. that in view of the financial difficulties of the Government at the present time, it was not reasonable to ask it to make an increase in the rute of subsidy. This view was also supported by the chairman, who said he doubted very much if the Government could fmd the money. He considered that in view of the fact that the 12^ per cent had recently becn promised, it would not be wise to presa for an increase. The increased rate would, he considered, probably react in increased taxation in other directions. increase Opposed. It was decided to inform the Matamata County Council that if an assurance was forthcoming that the 12 i per cent. rebate had definitely been granted for this year, it was considered reasonable assistancc. A request from twenty residents of Mamaku asking for the completion of the metalling of Okarikihi Street was referred to the county engineer (Mr. T. S. Robertson) who stated that he did not eonsider it advisable to continne this work during the wet weather. It was decided to advise the ratepayers concerned that the completion of the work would be left to the discretion of the county engineer. A plan showing the proposed subdivision scheme, of property owned by Remana Wiremu and Ema Ruihi was approved. Provisional allocations of amounts to be allowed for maintenance of county Jmain highway s for the year 1032-33 wero stated to be approximately 30 per cent. less than last year. Relief Work on Farms. Exception was taken to letters rcceived from thc secretary, Rotorua Unemployment Committee stipulating eonditions for emnloyment undei No. 5 Scheme on farms, the chahman stating that he, as the county's delegate to the committee, had .not received notifieation of executive meetings. Cr. J. E. Martin considered that the council should receive copies of the minutes of the committee meetings at which the regulations were drafted. On the motion of Cr. Keith it was decided that thc committee be informed that the county delegates had not been advised of meetings, and asking under what authoritv the regulations contained in the letter had been made.
