ASHBURTON, Wednesday. Unable, through infirmity to leave his bed, an ■ old man named Thompson, had a terrifying experience at Hinds, when his son's house was burnt down iast night. He was alone in the house when the fire occurred, and his repeated cries for assistance failed to hring help, until the room \yas hurning, and full of smoke. Then Mr. Artlxur Hood, who was sleeping in a hut nearby, heard him and rushed to the rescue. Mr. Hood was driven back several times by the smoke and heat, hut finally entered by the bedroom. window to get the qrippled man out of bed and through the window. It was no easy task, hut Mr. Hood managed it just in time. The house was 40 years old and was completely destroyed with the contents. There was only a small insurance.
