FAILURE TO MAINTAIN
HUSBAND ORDERED TO PAY UP ALL ARREARS. In the case of Bragg v. Bragg, which came before Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., on Monday, an order for imprisonment was sought by the wife against her husband, A. E. Bragg, for failure to pay arrears of maintenance amounting to £50. Mr. J. D. Davys appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. E. Roe for the defence. Evidence was taken in Gisborne on behalf of the husband to the effect that he had been out of work on and off during a period of 18 months. For the wife, it was stated that for some years she had been conducting a travelling millinery business, but owing to ill-health, was not able to carry on and her car was seized. She was thus deprived of the ability to earn her living and was dependent upon her children. Mr. Paterson said it appeared as if no effort had been made by Bragg to meet his maintenance payments even when he was in work as a public works foreman. He would be comniitted to three months' imprisonment, the warrant to be vacated on payment of £26, plus solicitor's fees. An application for variation of the order by the husband was dismissed.
