WON £5000 SWEEP

CHRISTCHURCH MAN BOUGHT TICKET WITH BRIDGE WINNINGS CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. The news of a windfall of £5000 came to Walpole Street, Waltham, this morning, but at first no one seemed to know who was its rightful owner. They found it hard to believe that in their street there lived a Mr. "H.E.R." who had just won £5000 in "Tatt's." When interviewed the lucky ticketholder was emphatic. "I don't want my name mentioned, but you can say that I'm very pleased to receive it and it will come in very h'andy in these strenuous times." He took out a battered leather wallet from an inside pocket and produced the ticket. He let it flutter on to his knees and chuckled. "You know, it's a funny thing the way I bought it. You see, I belong to a bridge cluh, where I play every week for 3d a hundred. For five or six weeks J never won a penny. Then about a fortnight ago I had a really lucky night. I won 7/9, and thought I'd have a ticket in 'Tatt's'. I began to think it had missed." . "No, I've no plans for th'e future," he said ."I suppose it was bound to come, for I've been taking a couple of tickets in 'Tatt's' ever since it started. It's a strange thing that this should come just a fortnight after I've retired after 51 years of service with the same firm. Of course, you know, with exchange and all that it is more likely to be £4300 than £5000, and the Government will take something no doubt.
