LINCOLN COLLEGE
BOARD REJECTS MOTION TO INTRODUCE DAIRYING CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Suggestions that Canterbury College at Lincoln should extend„its work in regard to dairying, were introduced at a meeting of the Board of Governors to-day which rejected the proposal by a substantial majority. The Hon. G. Buddo moved that, as in the present state of the farming ind-ustry, dairying appeared to give the most reliable and the steadiest returns where- the farm had suitable land available, a committee be set up to consider the question of a dairying course at the college with a view to giving each student practical training in working a dairy farm. Mr. Buddo argued that in spite of the depression the dairy farmers were doing better than other farmers, and he thought that the- college should help young farmers to learn something from which they might make money. The majority of the members of the board, the voting being six fo three, opposed the motion on the ground that dairjdng could not be called an industry in Canterbury, owing to the low rainfall, and that in any case, dairying was the special concern of Massey College, while Lincoln College was supposed to be dpvoted to agriculture. There was a gentlemen's agreement in regard to the question, and for this reason it was suggested that the Government might refuse to find money for the ejctension of dairying at Lincoln College.
