SUBMERGED VOLCANO
diiscovery in philippines. A large submerged volcano was recently discovered in Philippine waters by the United States and Geodetic Survey, north-west of Palawan Island, about 30 miles offshore, near the entrance to Malampaya Sound. The rim of the crater is only slightly broken at depths varying from 29 to 56 feet below the surface of the sea. It is roughly five miles in diameter and circular in shape. The depth inside the crater ranges from 180 to 270 feet, while the surrounding waters, charted at an average dept of 600 feet, vary from 300 to 1200 feet. This is the second submerged volcano found in the waters of the Southern Philippines. Last year a submarine volcano which had risen 3500 feet from the ocean floor and was still 1600 feet below the surface was found about 25 miles south of Jolo.
