STORM OF PROTEST
ETON COLLEGE STUDENTS EESENT LATEST DECREE. An order forbidding Eton College boys to wear coloure* waistcoats during their traditional "Fourth' of June" festiviti'es this year aroused a storm of protest in the school against the exponents of economy. The upper bcys always try to outrival each other in the brightness of their waistcoats on this day of days. In the "Eton College Clironiele" a letter signed "Disappointed" said: "The authorities have made a grave mistake. No saving can result from thus abolishing an ancient custom. Nearly every boy has his fancy waistcoat, and those few who lack the required garment will inevitably buy one. It is not necessary for Lord's, but there are very few boys sufficiently strong-minded to appear without it. One might as well persuade boys to go in felt hats. "Ofte waistcoat will last many years, and is essential for weddings and similar functions. We are tired of these so-called economies which never save .more than a few shillings." A letter signed by the Hon. L. G. B. Brett, captain of the school, C. M. McLaren, captain of the cricket j eleven, retorts as follows: "The object of the economy was simply to answer the very reasonable objections of p-ar-ents at having to pay for. a garment worn on only three days in the year."
