PRINCE OF WALES CUP MATCH BETWEEN MAORI TEAMS.
WINNERS' BACKS SUPERIOR. PALMERSTON N., Saturday. The Prince of Wales Cup match between the North and South Island Maoris was played to-day in the presence of a large crowd of spectators. The ground was dry and a light wind blew from the north end. The North Island played with the wind in the first half. The first score came when Nun dummied his way through prior to handing to Potaka who outpaced the opposition and scored. Potaka goaled. When on the move the North backs were dangerous, but in the loose the South forwards were in the ascendant. A rush, in which Tom Robinson, Tainui, Bennett and Grennell joined, allowed the lastnamed to take the final pass and go over. Wright goaled. The South backs operated on the right wing, and a kick through caught Johnson in an awkward position. The ball rebounced off Mantel to go over the line, a forward following through to score. Wright failed with the kick. Both sides threatened danger on occasions, but play was not of the usual high order. „ Half time, was called with South leading. In the second spell North threw the ball about enterprisingly, and evidenced superiority in this department. From a rebound off the ground a kick by Geary was accepted by Malcolm, who burst over wide out. Watson failed with the kick. Downs was away immediately in another movement, but the final pass went astray. A clean heel enabled Nun to set the line racing, Watson coming up fast to accept and cut straight through. Potaka goaled. The next movement came from a forward melee on the white line, Taiuru barging over to score. The kick failed. North were outplaying the opposition, and Nun worked the blind side to send Potaka over wide out, while a brilliant run by Downs gave the five-eighth another splendid try. The North backs finished off a perfect movement when Watson sent Meremere over, the winger running round for Wetere to goal. With the North backs again on the move, Downs put in a great dash, Potaka completing. Johnson goaled. The whistle sounded with the score: North 35 South 8 Mr. T. Parata refereed. _

Second Spell On resuming Rotorua immediately pushed to their opponents' line, where R. Thompson got away and kicked over the line. In a race for the ball he beat the visiting full-back and scored behind the posts. The try was a trifle lucky for another foot and -he ball would have been in the deadoall area. Sutherland made no mistake with the kick. Rotorua 18, Putaruru 6. ! The handling by the home backs was better than earlier in the game. Their next try came from a passing movement started by Garlick who sent to Morrison, the latter's speed taking him across well out. Sutherland made a good attempt with the kick which just failed. Rotorua 21, Putaruru 6. Bad handling by the home backs gave the visitors possession, but unnecessary kicking lost them the advantage. A smart forward rush by the visitors saw Garlick make an effort to pick up the ball from under their toes, but he was brushed aside and play was carried to Rotorua's line where Thompson got over. Hall failed to improve the scores. Rotorua 21, Putaruru 9. Rotorua Dominates , From the half-way kick, the home pack again worked their way to the visitors 25, where T. Thompson received from a scrum and sent to Hamiora, to Waerea the last named beating his man and scoring in a handy position. Sutherland converted. Rotorua 26, Putaruru 9. R. Waerea was prominent in leading a forward rush which ended in the ball going out in Putaruru's 25. From the ensuing line-out, the visitors dropped the ball to the toe and dribbled to Rotorua's territory where McRae secured from a ruck and sent to Hall who was smartly dumped in front of the posts. Following an infringement, Putaruru was awarded a penalty, Hall making no mistake with th'e kick. Rotorua 26, Putaruru 12. Rotorua's next scoring movement started when Hamiora sold a dummy to the opposition and supported by R. Waerea, went to Putaruru's line where the latter dived over to score a good try. Sutherland converted. Rotorua 31, Putaruru 12. A rush down the line by Waerea and Sullivan saw the latter run out in the corner but he soon regained the ball from a scrum and bumped his way across to score in the corner. Sutherland's attempt fell short. On two more occasions, Rotorua threw away chances through faulty handling. The final score was the result of a forward rush led by Mackie and Barber from which R. Thompson went over alongside the posts, Sutherland's kick went wide, and the game ended with the scores Rotorua 37, Putaruru 12. Dr. W. S. Wallis refereed.
