LOCAL AND GENERAL

Better Building Wanted. "I am quite prepared to admit that we could have a 100 per cent. better show if we had a proper building of our own," said Mr, H. P. Ford, at Friday night's meeting of the Rotorua A. £tnd P. Association executive committee. Reduced Entrance Fees. As a means of inducingygreater competition at the annual Winter Show the committee of the Rotorua A. and P. Association on Friday night decided to recommend to the new committee an all-round reduction in entrance fees." Show Schedules. The necessity for the early issue of schedules was stressed at the meeting of the committee of the Rotorua A. and P. Association on Friday night. As a result of discussion it was decided to have the schedules issued in the first week in November at the latest, and earlier if possible. Meetings at Ngongotaha. "I believe that it would be wise to hold meetings of the association in Ngongotaha," said the secretary (Mr. H. Wilkinson) at Friday night's meeting of the Rotorua A. and P. Association. Mr. Wilkinson went on to say that the show secured a great deal of support from Ngongotaha, and meetings there would he fully justified. Maoris Arrested. The police arrested two Maoris on Saturday in connection with alleged thefts from the Mission House at Whaka. This building was entered on two separate occasions and eushions, table eovers, etc., taken. One Maori will be charged in court this morning with theft, and the other with receiving stolen goods. One of the men will also be charged with the theft of an overcoat from a motor car in Arawa Street on Thursday. Calls for Help. The police received a call on Saturday evening stating that cries h'ad been heard in Pererika Street leading to the belief that some one was in distress near the railway line. Constable G. Roberts hurried to the scene and with the assistance of a person who had heard the cries, searehed the embankment and ditches from 8.15 until 10.30 p.m. without finding anything to account for the outcry. Persons in the locality were confident that calls for help were plainly uttered.

Railway Board. The Railway Board, comprising j Sir James Gunson, the Hon. E. Newman, Mr. H. A. Sterling, Mr. W. Roussell (general manager), accompanied by Mr. A. W. Willsted (commercial manager), arrived in Rotorua from the Bay of Plenty districts on Friday. While in town they inspected the manure shed in the station yard, which has been the subject of protests raised by the Rotorua Borough Council and Chamber of Commerce. All the members of the board, with the exception of the Hon. E. Newman, left by the after- j noon train for Frankton. Loss of Material. j At the meeting of the Rotorua A. j and P. Association on Friday night, 1 Mr. G. Steele, who acted as floor j steward at the Winter Show, had an unpleasant tale to tell with regard j to the pilfering of material. He declared that the association had j been losing between £10 and £15 a! year by the theft of tables and other i classes of timber. Table sets and di- ! visions for the poultry pens had en- j tirely disapjpeared without a possi- ' bility of tracing them. "The worst thing of the lot," explained Mr. J Steele, 'was that table tops had j actually been ripped off while the ' show was being cleared. It was explained that the association now had a shed of its own in which material ; could be stored, and that the annual loss from pilfering would be, there- j fore, minimised.
