NEW LARGE MONOPLANES FOR AFRICAN ROUTES

RUGBY, Friday. Part of the fleet of eight large monoplanes intended for use on the Afriean routes by Imperial Airways, Limited, is now undergoing final tests at Coventry at the works of the Armstrong-Whitworth Company. The whole fieet will be completed within a few weelcs. Each maehine, when fully loaded, will weigh 83 tons. Each has. a span of 90ft, and is powered with four double Mongoose 340 horse-power aircooled radial motors, and is designed to meet the difficult flying eonditions characteristic of the Afriean airways. The aerodromes between Cairo and Capetown are situated more than 5000 feet above sea level and the new liners are designed to operate normally at a h'eight of 9000 feet. Even with one of the four motors stopped the craft will be among the fastest civil aeroplan.es yet built.
