The building of the outlet tunnel for the new Blue baths has resulted in the sulphur beds under the garden plots at the back of the baths affecting the growth of plants and shrubs. To serve as an outlet for the fumes, vents have been sunk into the plots and it is now expected that no further difficulty will he experienced. Increase Shown Figures obtained from the certifying officer of the Rotorua district (Mr. A. M. Robertson) indicate an increase of 24 in the number of unemployed registered in the district yesberday, the total being 578. Thirty-eight men at Ngongotaha and 19 at Mamaku are included in this total, which comprises 95 single men, 316 married men with up to two children and 107 with' three or more children. Competition and Trade The introduction of the rather time worn slogan that "competition is good for trade," brought a quick response from Mr. H. H. Sterling, chainnan of the Railways Board, during a meeting held at Whakatane on Thursday. "I know nothing of tha sort," said Mr. Sterling. "Co-operation is superse'ding competition. Competition h'ad produced prolific waste. If sea transport cannot be justified it must go out." Rangitaiki Fishing. In connection with the suggestion that road access would malce the Rangitaiki river a popular resort for anglers, the Conservator of Fish and Game, Mr. A. Kean, states that stocking has proceeded every year from Murupara to Te Teko. Fry, in large numbers are to be liberated in the waters again this season. The Whirinaki is also being well-stocked and this river provides fine fishing water to within about 20 miles of Taupo. Orphans' Club Meet Approximately 60 members, under the chairmanship of Bro. W. S. IV allis, gathered for the usual fortnightly social evening of the Rotorua Orphans' Club in the Druids' Hall on Thursday evening. A programme of hright and interesting items provided a pleasant evening's entertainment. Items wero presented by Bro. G. Daubney (song), Bro. F. Newmarch (recitation), Mr. Goodchild (cornet solo), Bro. J. Thomas (humorous recitation), Bro. Tattersall (humorous sketch), the Rotorua Cossacks and the Orphans' Orphans' Orchestra, while two visitors, Messrs Cook and Wilkinson, also presented items which were thoroughly enjoyed.
