DEATH IN FLAT
(Press. Assn. —
ACTRESS ACQUITTED OF MANSLAUGHTER OR MURDER
-By Telegraph — Copyright).
LONDON, Thursday. Mrs Elvira Barney was found nqt i'uilty of murder or manslaughter. During the evidence Mrs Barney •onfessed that she had been the mis.ness and keep-er of Michael Stephen. They frequently quarrelled about a woman with whom he went gambling. Stephen threatened to leave her. "If you do," she explained, "I will shoot myself." During a struggle for pos?ession of a revolver a shot was fired. The prosecution emphasised that the revolver required a 141b pull. It was practically impossible for Stephen himself to have fired it. A message received on June 4 stated that Mrs Elvira Dolores Barney, actress daughter of Sir John Mullens, a retired stockbroker*, had heen arrested and remanded for a week-on a charge of murdering Michael Stephen, son of a bank.manager. Stephen was found dead, shot in the chest, in Mrs Barney's luxurious flat at Kensington.
