WANGANUI, Saturday. An audacious robbery was perpetrated at the Federal Hotel early this morning. The thieves entered the office and opaned the saf e, stealing not- ! es and silver to the value of over I £100. A bunch of keys was stolen from the hedroom of tlie proprietress, Mrs Mary Bethune, while she was asleep. A man" hid under her hed, presumahly before 10 o'elock on Saturday night, and watched hdr retire and place the keys under a- cushion. When she was asleep, he took the keys and unloeked the hedroom door and let himself out. He then ransacked the office and the safe on the ground floor. When the porter came on duty this morning, he found the front door and the office door open. The safe door was ajar and all the money gone. Mrs Bethune who held some of the money in trust for others, is a heavy loser. The indications point to two thieves working togeth'er, one- evidently having a thorough knowledge of the house and the proprietress.
