FUTURE WELFARE OF EMPIRE DEPENDS' ON OTTAWA CONFERENCE.

LONDON, Saturday. Speaking on behalf of the Prince of Wales at the Canadian dinner at fhe Savoy Hotel to the Ottawa delegates, Prince George markedly iippressed his hearers. by soun(jing a call to the Empire to give the world a lead towards the outlet of its distresses. The Prince said the future welfare of the Empire depended upon success at Ottawa. The recognition of the equality of status of the Dominions could not better be emphasised than by the holding of the confer ences in a Dominion capital. The delegates should make every sffort at Ottawa to hearten the world. In concerted measures, in which other countries could co-oper-ate, the Empire could give a lead in the right direction. If an upward movement of wholesale prices could be started, the benefit to producers would be far greater than any measures more exclusively inspired. The outhreak of trade relations threatened to strangle world trade. As the Empire internally was relatively free of these causes of distress, could she not give a lead which would restor-e confidence? The Prince wished the. representatives godspeed and a full measure of success, also a favourable response to the Government's loan conversion appeal, which might prove the beginning to a return to better thiiigs.
