Australia On Defence New Zealand kicked off against a light breeze and the Australian backs immediately got going but were srnothered by the visiting players who took play into the Australian's twentyfiye, a penalty stoppdng the movement. Following tight play the All Black backs got going but were stopped hy Cerutti who instituted a counter attack into the New Zealand twenty-five. Play centred in Australian territory and the hqme team were kept def ending for some time until a breakaway headed by Cerutti spelt danger for New Zealand, Bullock-Douglas, however, checking the movement. The All Blacks quickly recovered the losf ground and Kilby sent Page and Caughey away the lastnamed attempting a "pot" which missed. New Zealand were shortly afterwards awarded a penalty, the kick at goal missing." New Zealand had a close call when Lilburne was twice caught out of position and' the Australian backs swept down to the visitors' line but the efforts were spoilt by infringements. Kilby, Page, Pollock and Caughey combined in a pretty passing rush for New Zealand but could not break through the Australian defence. A momeftt later, however, McLean handed the ball to Bullock-Douglas wh'o scored a fine try. Pollock missed the kick. New Zealand 3, Australia 0. Home Team Retaliates ■Retaliation efforts by Australia carried play down to the All Black line, but the forwards kept th'em out. A further succession of attacks by Ausra lia threatened the New Zealand: line, the home backs at this stage throwihg the ball about with freedom." New Zealand saved however, and play was transferred to Australia's twentyfive where Steere ohtained possession and transferred to Hore for the lastnamed to score. The try was converted. At this . stage Caughey was hurt and left the field. McLean missed a good opening following a spirited forr ward dash hy New Zealand and White nearly scored for Australia. New Zealapd were penalised, five yards from the line and Lawton evened the score with a great ki'ck. New Zealand 8, Australia 8. Australia Ahead Enterprising play Ijy the home backs again put the visitors on defence and Sturtbridge narrowly missed a score through slipping. A penalty against Kilby gave Lawton another chance at g'oal which he made no mistake with, and placed Australia in the lead. Australia 11, New Zealand 8. Bullock-Douglas and Caughey, who had returned to the field, made advances for New Zealand but Australia recovered, Cowper malcing a bold hid for a try, but he was stopped hy Bullock-Douglas. Play at this stage was very fast and New Zealand went into attack but Sturtbridge stopped Page, and ran to Lilburne who tackled him well. The clearing kick however was intercepted by Oerutti who scored. Lawton again converted. Australia 16, New Zealand 8. Leeway Reduced A hrilliant "pot" by Page immediately afterwards reduced the visitors' leeway. Australia 16, New" Zealand 12. A- sudden attack hy the All Black forwards was. brilliantly stopped hy Steggall, and the home forwards carried play down to the New Zealand line, Cerutti scoring an unconyerted try. ■ Australia 19, New Zealand 12. Another score came quickly, the "All Black paek sweeping down to the Australian line where Purdue forced his way over. Pollock goaled. Australia 19, New Zealand 17.
