wimbledqn tourney ELSDON VINES (U.S.) BEAT S AUSTRALIAN STAR, »'S CIIAWFORD k;.„ MEN'S SEMI-FINALS

-By Telegraph — Gopyrlght).-

LONDON/ Friday. : To-day was the first 'iinseaSbhable day of the tournament, the courts being slippery after the rain. : Crawford played in socks. Perhaps it was overmuch to expect Crawford to defeat such a fire-eating hitter as Vines,- who was at the top ; of his form, but nobody was prepar--ed for such a dehacle. The Australian never once appeared to have a: chance, his strokes looking feeble in comparison with Vines. Crawford was . below form, but it is questionable whether even at his best he could have . withstood such a penetrating attaclc. • An all-American women's final is? assux-ed by Mrs. Wills-Moody's easy defeat of the plucky Birminghamite, Miss Mary Heeley, who soon became

helpless against the relentless champion. In the semi-final of the men's singles Vines (America) defeated Crawford, 6 — 2, 6 — 1, 6 — 3. Austin beat Satom, 7 — 5, 6 — 2, 6 — 1. Women's Singles: — Semi-final: — Mrs. Wills-Moody beat Miss Heeley, 6—2, 6—0.
