The primary school basketball matehes for the Herbert Smith Memorial Cup between the Rotorua and Ngongotaha school teams set down for decision to-day, have been postponed and will be played on the Ngongotaha school grounds next Saturday morning. Unemployment Decreases. Information obtained from the Certifying Officer for the Rotorua district (Mr. A. M. Robertson), yesterday indicate that a drop of 98, the majority of whom are single men, has occurred in the unemployed registrations in the Rotorua district since June 11. The total registrations for the district at the present time total 550, comprising 93 single men, 304 married men with up to two children and 153 married men with three or more children. Included in these figures are 20 unemployed at Mamaku and 28 at Ngo-

ngotaha. Rotary Dinner. The Rotorua Rotary Club is holding its fifth annual dinner at the Geyser Hotel to-night. District Governor Valder, of Hamilton, and nine members of the Hamilton Club have notified their intention of being present. The Blue Bath. The work of tiling the new Blue Bath is to be put in hand immediately and it has been found necessary to close the bath to the public from Monday next until the work is completed. Degrees of Frost. The severe frost which was experienced on Wednesday morning last has apparently created much discussion and prompted many estimates of the degree of severity of the fall. Based on the meteorological international mean temperature standard of 30.4 degrees on the grass, eleven degrees of frost wexe recorded on Wednesday last. This is the heaviest frost recorded this winter, the previous record being 10.4 degrees on May 26.

Abattoir Water. Following the big earthquake in Hawkes Bay, the main well at the Rotorua abattoirs failed. Whether this was the direct result of the upheaval cannot be definitely stated, but the fact remains that the supply of water to the well ceased to meet requirements, and it hecame necessary to look for other supplies. The borough engineer, Mr. F. Buziyard, therefore, looked for a new site and a well has been sunk within about four chains from the original well. A good flow of water has been found and the concrete lining of ^the old well has been removed and used in the walls of the new one. Rationing Work. The suggestion made at the last meeting of the Rotorua Borough Council that advantage should be taken of the unexpended loan balance in hand to lceep members of the outside staff on full time instead of rationing work to these men, has not yet been finalised. The works and financial committee, which wer© to deal with the matter have not yet been able to finalise the issue, but they will meet in confirmation next week. Cycling Race. A road cyele race will be held by the Rotorua Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club next Saturday afternoon, a return course between Fen- ' ton Street and the Mourea Post Offic© having been chosen. The race will commence at 2.15 p.m., entries closing with the hon. secretary (Mr. C. J. Casey) at 5 p.m. on Tuesday next. Ohinemutu Blow-out. When he read of the recent "blow up" at Ohinemutu a Palmerston North man declared that he was not surprised by what happened, and recalled a visit to the Pa as far baek as 1881, when surveyors were planning the township. For each corner peg, he said, thej'- used 3x2 scantling- fifteen feet long. When driving these in they sometimes disappeared through the crust of the earth and were lost in the eavernous depths below. Sight and Hearing. Mr. R. A. Noedl, Optician and Deaf Aid Specialist, of Palmerston North, is visiting Rotorua and may be consulted at Len Fisher, Ltd., Chemists, Fenton Street, on Saturday 2nd, Monday 4th, and Tuesday 5th. Mr. Noedl is sole representative in the Dominion for Messrs. F. C. Rein and Son, London, makers of over three hundred aids to hearing, and scientific acoustical instrument makers to H.M. Government. All persons hard of hearing or deaf should not fail to consult Mr. Noedl. During this visit special arrangements have been made for sight testing, and residents of Rotorua and district requiring glasses or lenses to their own frames are requested to call at Len Fisher, Ltd., Chemists.
