THE WEEK'S GAMES WEDNESDAY GAMES FALL BELOW THE USUAL STANDARD EXECUTIYE MEETING
(Notes by
A meeting of the executive of the Rotorua Basketball Association was held last Friday. Present were: Mrs T. Kelly, Mrs Managh, Mrs Shearer, Mrs Walker, Mrs Guy. Misses F. Bates (secretary), H. Matthews, D. Emeny, J. Isdale, D. Davies, T. Johnson. It was resolved to hold a 500 tournament in the Druids Hall -on Friday July 8. To loolc after these arrangements" and send out invitations, etc., : the following sub-committee was el- j ected: Mrs Kelly (chairwoman), Mrs I Shearer, Miss Johnson and Miss Dav- J ies. ; It was emphasised that captains or j coaches transferring players from one team to another must first obtain the consent of the committee. Permission was granted the H.S.O.S. Club to play Tirau at a later date. ( On account of some confusion arising through fixtures published on June 15, it was agreed to allow the following teams to replay their games at the close of the first round: — Wara- j tah v. Konini; Tui v. Ngaio. Wednesday Competition The games played at the Government Grounds last Wednesday were the peorest exhibition shown for some considerable time. This was very disappointing, as sp'ec|ators stoppingto gather a general idea of the game, witnessed little more than a number of girls giggling and colliding with one another. On more than one occasion, players had to be warned and requested to take more interest in the game. This is not basketball and only tends to injure the rsputation of the game. No doubt it would be to the advantage of basketball if the players could endeavour to memorise the following small extract from the rule book. — It is the experience of all who have tried it, in basketball, as in all other sports, that the better one can play the game, the greater is the enjoyment derived from it. Basketball is both a reason for getting fit and a means of keeping fit; its physical ber.efits comprise all-round exercise and development, with the enhancing of grace and quiclcness: Its satisfactions lie in the zest of a good game well played, with the sense of body and mind working efrectively together, and the joy of united effort to a team end. "The gaifie's the thing!" Ngaio v. High School B. Ngaio were handicapped by being a goaler short, but even so show a decided improvement in combination, and will doubtless go stiil further as they continue to play together. The centres on both sides were fast in the first half of the game and the play was fairly evenly distributed at the two ends. Three good defenders in
the School team made the task of the two Ngaio forwards too difficult and they missed a number of goals through having to throw from too great a distance. At the interval the score was School 6, Ngaio 3. In the second half, the School centres were too fast for Ngaio and kept the ball well up to their forwards. The forwards were surer in their goaling and in spite of hard fighting by the Ngaio defence the score mounted rapidly. The Ngaio forwards stuck to their task well and scored three more goals, but the game ended with the score at High School B 19, Ngaio 6. Referee, Miss Wilson. High School A v. Konini High School again added a win to their credit, defeating their opponents by 12 goals to 6. This game was not very exciting as Konhy. were handicapped by a shortage of players, thus making the game very one sided. The latter's centres tried exceedingly hard to keep their two forwards supplied with the ball who were finding it a difficult proposition to avoid their defenders. The High School team were responsible for some very speedy passing and well combined team tactics. The forwards were hard to keep in eheck and scored well for their side, the score at half -time being High School 6, Konini 2. In the second half Konini rallied and gave a mueh better exhibition but could not catch up with their opponents. If High School can maintain their improvement of the last two weeks, they can be expected to upset several of the leading teams in the next round. Final score High School A 12, Konini 6. Referee, Mrs E. Guy. Results: Waratah 9, Tui nil. Kowhai 23, Mokoia 3. High School A 12, Konini 6. High School B 19, Ngaio G.
