CRAWFORD DEFEATS PERRY AFTER FQUR SET BATTLE BRILLIANT DRIVING

LONDON, Wednesday. The weather was flne and warm for the continuation of the tennis tournament. The centne c.ourts were packed hy eager speetators standing room not being available when the Amerieans Shields, Vines, and Wood, the Englishmen Perry and Austin, the Spaniard Maier, and the Japanese Satfoh and tho Australian Crawford battled for the right to enter the semi-finals. Crawford drove hhautifull^, and also used his ineisive backhand. The Australian was slightly superior in finding- the corners. Perry attacked in the third set which he won in fiftecn minutes, but after brilliant driving exchanges in the fourth set Crawford was victorious. Satoh took the initiative, and surprisingly eliminated the title holder Wood, who repeatedly missed easy strokes. Austin, in eliminating Shields, consistently produced flowing drives. He did not allow the American to take the initiative, and he amply gained his revenge for last year's defeat. Crawford defeated Perry 7—5, 8—6, 2—6, 8—6. Satoh beat Wood, 7—5, 7—5, 2—6, 6—4. Vines beat Maier, 6 — 2, 6—3, 6 — 2. Austin beat Shields, 6 — 1, 9 — 7, 5—7, 6—1.
