SMUGGLING FOR A PRINCE
CHEQUE "FRAUD." An appeal heard at Montreuil recently revealed that the vigilance of the Spanish Customs on the FrancoSpanish frontier has caused trouble for the Spanish Prinee Louis Alfonso of Bourbon, Duke of Ancola. In Fehruary he was condemned to six months' impx-isonment and a fine of £80 for having uttered a worthless cheque to the management of the Le Touquet Casino. The cheque, for £1200, was refused by the bank, on the ground that the Prince had no credit balance. In an appeal before the Montreuil tribunal, Prince Louis explained that at the time when he wrote the cheque he was confident that he would be able to meet it. He knew that a messenger was on his way from Spain with 80,000 pesetas (£1600). But the messenger was arrested on a eharge of attempting to smuggle currency out of the country. When the Prince's friends in Spain heard of this they sent out another messenger, who succeeded in smuggling across the frontier a fresh supply of money, which enabled Prince Louis to pay the casino management in full. The tribunal therefore reduced the sentenee to a simple fine of 500f (£4), with the benefit of the law of suspension.
