TELEPHONE RENTALS

RATEPAYERS' ASSOCIATION INFORMED REDUCTION IMPOSSIBLE. HEAVY LOSS INVOLVED. On June 17th the Rotorua Ratepayers' Association wrote to the Postmaster-General asking for a reduction in telephone rates. The association held that a reduction was not only justified by the assessed allround spending power of the people, but that it would also prove a financial success. In his reply the Minister says: — "In referenee to your letter of the 17th instant, making representations on behalf of the Rotorua Ratepayers' Association for a reduction in telephone rentals : H beg to inform you that telephone rentals are at present upon the lowest possible basis, having regard to the cost of providing the service. While it has been found possible to alford a slight relief to certain subscribers upon lengthy party-lines in rural areas, the extension of the concession to subscribers in general would involve my department in a heavy loss of revenue which would ultimately require to be borne by the general body of taxpayers. "In the circumstances, it is much regretted that any proposal to reduce the existing scale of telephone rentals cannot, at this juncture, be given favourable consideration."
