increasing magnitude of unemployment burden.

AUCKLAND, Monday. A reference to the magnitude of the unemployment problem was made by Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates at a farewell gathering to-day. He said 70,000 men are dependent on the unemployment funds, and takr ing their dependants into consideration the total became 200,000. "It must be clear that whatevep plan is thought of fdr assisting thos^ in need,0 the position is not improvr ing. Hence if any proposals emerging from the Ottawa Conference would enable the present downhill slide to be arrested and encouragd a movement^, in the other directiofi [ tlae conference would be well wortli while."
