TRUCK BURNED
EXPLOSION OF TANK BLOWS DRIVER'S CAB TO PIECES A heavy motor-truck owned by Messrs Gamble and Chaplin, bush contractors, of Mokai, was returning to the settlement on Saturday night when it back-fired and burst into flames. Mr J. Gamble, jnr., who was driving the vehicle at the time had time to escape from the cab, but in trying to save his truck from complete destruction, had his hand badly burned. Shortly after the outbreak occurred the benzine tank, which is a gravity one situated under the bonnet, exploded and completely wrecked the cab. The flames then enveloped the whole vehicle and turned it into a total wreck. Spedding and Company's salvage waggon went out yesterday to bring the truck to Rotorua hut as it was a complete loss, and the road was narrow and extremely rough it was found advisable to leave the wreck where it was. The truck is covered by insurance.
