WOODLANDS BRANCH HOLD , SECOND, BIRTHDAY « PARTY. ' • ENJOYABLE EVENING. The Woodlands Women's institute celebrated its - second birthday on Thursday afternoon in>the Woodlands hall. The ladies, of this Institute Worked hard.'to make the party a-SUC-cess; The '-room was delicately decorated in- different shades which blended charmingly togsther. Coloured streamers hung in an arch from the middle ofthe ceiling, drooped slightly "at the centre to rise- again at the walls. - Facing-.the door was a long table which was . covered with all manrier of- sewing and fancy work; • done by the ladies thenlselves. A huge handworked bedspread draped one wall near the door. Mrs. Dodgson received and welcomed the guests, and Mrs- Hollard apologised for the absence of Mrs. Mulhern (President of the Woodlands Institute) who had been called away to Auckland on receiving • the sad news of her brother's death. A telegram, from Mrs. Mulhern, was read, expressing xegret at not being present at .the birthday. Mrs. Hollard then proceeded to open the after,110011 with. the singing of the Institute's song; Mrs. C. Hambly made.a very competent pianist, This was . followed- by a competition which Mrs. Black won. The programme arranged for the, afternoon was as f ollows : — Song, "Oh, It's Quiet Down Here," ,Mrs. J. . Armstrong; recitation, "Woodlands Institute," Mrs. Debreceny (own composing); Playette, Mrs. Lammas (housemaid)i, Mrs. Pilking- ■ to.n (Minister), Mrs. Hollard (mistress); -ballet dance, Miss Cecely Armstrong; recitation, -"Missiln^," Master- M. Hollard; song, -"Danny Boy," Miss B. Eelly; recitation, "The Tea-set," Miss E. Armstrong. Another competition was won by Mrs. Burke and a guessing competition by Mrs. E, Hunter. The Institute served a delicious home-made afternoon tea. . - The birthday cake, which was made by Mrs. Armstrong and iced by Mrs. Pilkington, was placed oh a- table in the middle of the room. Mrs. Whitenhall, president of the Whakatane Institute and also of the B.O.P. Federation, then gave a short but interesting speech in which she stresSed the "spirit of co-operation" that had resulted- through the work of the Institutes. Mrs. Whitenhall said that she knew some of the Whakatane Institute would have been present at the party, but unfortunately Show arrangements had - kept them back. Mrs. Looney then thanked Woodlands on behalf of the Waiotahi Institute, Mrs Waggner on behalf of the Opotiki Institute, and Mrs. Woolfield on behalf of Waimana. Among the ladies present were: Mesdames Dodgson, Hollard, Whitenhall (pres. of Whakatane), Waggner (pres. of Opotiki), P. Clark, Looney (pres. of Waiotahi), Woolfield (pres. of Waimana), Kirkbride, Steptoe, J. McKenzie,- A-. McCallion, Fisher, Cooper, Merry, Shove, Clark, Sargeant, Holloway, Pearson, Debreceny, L. Martin, Armstrong, Looney, Murray, Hudson, Glover, Fryer, Burnett, Morell, Fox, Maxwell, Briggs, Tabb, Forbes, Carroll, E. Yofing, Barber, ICing, Henenssey, G.
