GOLD KERNALS
SMUGGLER'S CLEVER RUSE. An ingenious method of smuggling gold dust into Austria to sell against the Austrian shilling, contrary to the currency restrictions, was revealed recently. A Persian merchant, Jahya Rahim, Avas charged at the Vtenna Police Court with the offence and sentenced to two weeks' imprisonment. It was stated that when the police raided a restaurant where it was suspected that illegal currency transactions were being conducted, they found 170 wooden boxes registered in the name of "Rahimoff." Suspecting that this was an alias used by Rahim, the police forced him to open the boxes. They appeared to contain harmless dried apricots. Consldering it strange that these should be registered, the police opened the fruit and found that each "kernel" consisted of a tiny linen yellow bag, the same size, shape and colour as a lcernel, but filled with pure gold cTust.
