LOW FINANCES

COMMERCE CONGRESS ROTORUA CHAMBER FINDS DIFFICULTY IN MAKING CONTRIBUTION. AN APPEAL FOR HELP. Considerable discussion took place on Friday night at a meeting of the Rotorua Chamber of Commerce, upon a request from the Associated Chambers for a contribution of £15 towards central administration costs and the expenses of the congress of chambers which is to be held in New Zealand in 1933. Mr. N. M. Keane felt that the finances of the- chamber were so low that they could not alford the contribution asked for. He moved that the sum of two guineas be contributed with the explanation that more could not be afforded. Mr, G. Steele seconded the motion. Mr. J. McDowell pointed out that on a population basis the amount of Rotorua's contribution should be £10. The chairman, Mr. S. J. Hale, said that if Rotorua and Taupo counties were included the contribution should be £16. . Mr. W. M. Ashton urged that an effort should be made to obtain help in the town before making a decision. Mr. Keane objected, and declared it was unwise for businessmen to canvas for money at the present time. Mr. McDowell did not agree. "We have cried long enough," he said, "and it is time we did something. A lot of these people are sure to visit Rotorua and we should get into touch

and find out how many of the dele- ; gates we can expect here and see that they come." Mr. L. Ewert was afraid that the chamber would leave itself open to criticism in only sending two gui- : neas. As an amendment Mr. McDowell moved that the chamber sontribute two guineas on account and inform the association that effort would be made by circular and personal appeal to raise £10. Mr. Chamber seconded and the amendment was carried.
