LOCAL AND GENERAL

Women's Club Stalls. The Rotorua "Women's Club report very satisfactory returns from the stalls conducted by the club at the Winter Show. The sweets stall, in particular, was very well patronised, while the tea-r'oom was well supportted by those requiring lunch or afternoon tea. The 251b bag of flour was won by Mr. H. Campbell, and the woollen rug by Mrs. Gainsford. The weight guessing competition for the bag of coal has not yet closed. The club is deeply indebted to Brents Ltd. Lake House, Grand Vue and Hinemoa House for their very generous response to the club's appeal fox* gifts of cakes, etc., to Captain Knowles for a very generous supply of vegetables, to Mesdames New and Sharp and the Waikato Valley Dairy. Golf Semi-Finals The semi-finals of the "Ngokonui" Macdonald Cup golf competition played on the Arikikapakapa eourse on Saturday afternoon produced interesting and close contests, although in each case the lower handicap players

proved the victors. M.,D. Carr defeated E. H. Hill, one up, and N. Smith defeated W. Kusabs, 4 and 2. The weather was unpleasant for the contests as intermittent heavy rain and a gusty wind prevailed throughout the day. The final will he played next Saturday. Land on Taupo Road. The question of promoting land settlement in the Rotorua district was mentioned at a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce on Friday night by Mr. N. M. Keane: He said there was a tract of about 10,000 aeres at the 10 mile peg on the Taupo Road which was a splendid property for cutting up, and if this were done it would provide a splendid link with Reparoa. He would like the chamber to find out from the Lands Department if it were possible to get this block opened.
