BUTTER MARKET

strange statement COMPETITION OF DOMINION BUTTER IN KINGSTON JAMAICA. Some extraordinary statements are made in an article published by a paper in Kingston, Jamaica. It states that the native dairymen there are having a bad time as a result of competition with New Zealand butter, which the writer undestood went there with a subsidy of ls per lb. It was maintained that it was possible to sell New Zealand butter there at ls 2d per lb, but the retailers made from 6d to lOd per lb profit by selling it at ls 8d to 2s per lb. As a result of this great profit, the shopkeepers pushed the sale of the imported butter to the detriment of the local makers. The writer admitted that he had never ahalysed New Zealand butter, but he believed it was hlmost certain that it would contain preservatives of some kind, possibly benzonate or boric acid. At l'east part of the above is_ amazing to New Zealanders, who know that the New Zealand producer receives no subsidy, and also that butter exported from this country contains no preservative.
