AUCKLAND TROTS.
The course at Epsom received a thorough cutting-up last Wednesday, and with several heavy showers since racing concluded that evening, the going may be worse for the concluding day to-day of the Auckland Trotting Club's winter meeting. Several horses that were unluclcy the first day and may do better, include Pegaway, Colorado, Bessie Parrish, Free Logan and Betterwin. The opening event is the Royal Handicap. This field has dwindled down considerably, and there are only eight left in now, most of them horses with breaking tendencies. However Moko Girl won the first day with a lot in hand and is going to take a lot of heading off again to-day, even from her present mark. Hue Coronado and Gold Realm are next best fancied. Two Unlucky Ones. Both Donee and Betterwin were very unlucky in their outing the first day. They may malce a good fight of it again in the Manukau Handicap, and if Betterwin is driven better this time, the odds are on him. Nellotta, a fine two-year-old, Pedlar, Star Pronto, Wee Machino, Mazda, Roylette, Fisher and Gold Seam all have plenty of speed, but it looks as if the final dash will be contested by Donee, Betterwin and Roylette. The big race, the. Mark Memorial, has attracted a field of thirteen, comprised of the same horses that contested the big heat the first day. The place-getters, Peter Pirate, Colorado, and Warspite, again promise to be in the thick of it, with Colorado the most likely to improve upon his placing. He was not well served in the running on Wednesday, and as he finished resolutely, he may be selected to go one better this afternoon. Herod and Prince Pedro both showed up the fii'st day, while Real Girl and Kewpie's Triumph were both finishing on nicely. Tt is probable that Colorado will do best on this occasion, with Peter Pirate and Herod next fancied. Bessie Parrish had the worst of the running in the trot the first day, and she impresses as a first rate prospect in the Members' Handicap, for she did everything right on Wednesday. Windchat is a solid customer all through, and even from her new mark, she will take some beating. Todd Bingen and Zanzibar a^e good trotters, but Mr. Penalty, Parrish Belle and Carl Mack will need to improve considerably to have a .'"winning chance. The most fancied is Bessie Parrish, over Todd Bingen and Windchat. In his race the first day Pegaway was very slow to strike a gait, was then rushed up to the leaders, and just when he looked like winning faded in the straight. Better handled he would have won, even after losing so much ground at the start. Donee figures here too, and Worthy Cause gave a very smooth display in winning the first day. Pukemiro, Prince Etawah, Whakahau" and Francis Lincoln may improve, but the final vote is for Pegaway, Worthy Cause and Donee. Good Material. Free Logan conceded everything a start in the sprint on Wednesday, losing all the benefit of his handicap, but if he gets away to-day in the Liverpool Handicap, he'will give them all something to do. The-e will be plenty of opposition, including the first day's victor, Direet Morning, who seored very easily; Travis, who failed badly when a hot favourite, the bad ground evidently being against him; Master Huia, Herod, Colorado, Peter Pirate, and Real Girl. There is sufficient material among those named to make up a decent contest, with Direet Morning probably finding the mark he is now on very different from going off the front and having everything his own way. It must be conceded, however, that ho did his work very well indeed and was nicely driven. The most fancied trio are 'tr
'■ ■■ ... u1.; . — T— ' ■ Free Logan, Colorado, and Herod, with Peter Pirate also possessing good chances. It is a peculiarity of the present system of haridicapping that here Colorado and Peter Pirate meet on the same mark, whereas in the big two mile race, the latter has to concede 24 yards. The curtain will be rung down on the Au Revoir Handicap. In this the brilliant Pegaway is engaged, and if he has not had too hard a race earlier in the day he will lead the minor sprinters a merry dance over the ten furlongs. Homeward went a fair race on Wednesday, and others with prospeets are Pukemiro, Worthy Cause, Cleao, Eleawah, Great Fame, Nathaniel, Rolfe Audubon, and Rey de Quest. It should be a good betting race to close up with, those most likely to be in demand being Pegaway, Rolfe Audubon, and Rey de Quest. Ashburton Races. There will be a fair arnount of interest taken in the winter fixture of the Ashburton Racing Club to-day, for with the approach of the Grand National meeting and the Wellington gathering (at which many southerners are competitors) the southern form is something to become aequainted with. Probably the majority of the horses engaged to-day at Ashburton will next race at Trentham and Riccarton. Horses in the galloping events at this meeting that will come. in for keen support to-day are the following: — Hinds Hurdles: Morena, Royal Saxon, and Nightcap. Moreton Hack: Metal Bird, Lord Buchan and Monastic. Mayfield Handicap: Silver Salver, First Song and Craigavon. Dromore Steeplechase: French Fleet, Thurina and Graball. Maronan Handicap: A1 Jolson, Ranelagh and Waterpower.
