SAVING TIME

ON TELERHONE CALLS POSTMASTER'S SUGGESTIONS TO ROTORUA EXCHANGE SUBSCRIBERS. LOOK UP THE NUMBER. In the course of an interview with the Rotorua Chamher of Commerce last night the Postmaster, Mr. A. H. Robertson, referred to the effort b&ing made to speed up telephone callsl "As you are no deubt 'aware/' he said, "I have accelerated the toll service, and the pereentage of calls that are connect'ed almost immediately with /the distanfc subscriber whilst the Rotorua subscriber remains a,t his telephone is Cteditahly high. Consideration should also be given to the importance of Rotorua as the switching station hetween AucklandWaikato .on the one side, and the Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, and Napier oti the other, and the* diffieulties of passing their traffic and at thp-same time, in order to give effect 'to this accelerated toll service. "Those of you who are large toll users have received a request from me to inscribe on: the Teaflet supplied a list of your business associates in the distant towns so that the riumber may he ftirnished you for a record to he used when you apply for a toll. This is important. If the number instead of the address of the distant person is supplied, the connection can reasonably be expected to be effected nine times qut of ten whilst the Rotorua suhscriber remains at his telephone. This may seem a mere detail, but I can assure you it will mean a large saving in time for the business men/-at faoth ends of the communication channel. I may also add that it will mean -quite a large saving in time for my operators." Mr. D. Canbie expressed gratification at the information that tolls could be speeded^ up, because delay's had heen very irritating in the past.
