The Pope's Vicar-General, Cardinal Salvaggiani, has issued an orcler forhidding the burning of candles hpfore statues and sacred images in the churches in the diocese of Rome. IIo declares that the burning of candles gives the appearance of superstition and the impression that it is done for gain. It does not centribute to the cleanliness of the church, he added.
