NOISOME REFUSE DUMP. j Bernard Shaw has finally won the long-drawn battle of the Wheathampstead refuse dump. The dump is near Shaw's Hertfordshire honie, and since 1922 he had been protesting against it in characteristic Shavian letters to the St. Albans Rural Council. In one letter he compared the dump to the fumes of the volcano of Stromboli,;"which is believed by the . islanders ; to communicate directly with hell and be in fact one of the chimneys of t,ha' ' establishment.' i» ti y fyr ?? ***
SPITTING COBRAS IN ZOO. Some more newcomers to the reptile houses at the London Zoo are a number of South African spitting cobras, which are locally known as ringhals. They eject poison from their fangs some six or seven feet, and invariably aim at the eyes of their enemy. These cobras have deplorable manners. Their keepers are obliged to wear goggles, for 'when they bring 5ood and water to the cobras' cages they receive a shower of venom in the eye from their ungrateful charges.
