WELLINGTON, Tuesday. "In view of the encouraging results of tobacco growing to date, the 2/- a pound advance given hy Great Britain to Empire grown leaf over foreign leaf in order to further the production of tobacco in the Dominions, isoa risk which might well he taken," said Mr. J. A. Campbell, director of the Horticultural Division of the Department of Agriculture, at the Wellington Rotary Cluh. "That New Zealand can grow good tobacco," he said, "was exemplified by the quality of the tobacco now heing produced." During the past few years, a very s'uhstantial return had been obtained from tobacco, amounting to something in excess of £150,000 in the value of the local production of the leaf. Production was mainly heing carried on under contract with the leading tobacco manufacturers of the Dominion. This meant that no growers or orgahisations were free to grow tobacco of suitable quality for purposes of testing overseas trade." Mr. Campbell stated further that the Department had under consideration a plan to give instruction in tobacco growing in connection with the small farm scheme outlfned hy the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister of Employment. Buyers had already given a fairly large order for the leaf. The instruction given would enable growers to produce a variety tohaCco most suitable for the market, and especially for export.
