ODD CENSUS FINISHED

Exclusive of angels, more than 1200 winged inhabitants reside permanently within Rouen's majestic cathedral. This strange fact is revealed by an unofficial census which has just been taken of the cathedral's population. No fewer than 900 pigeons consider the cathedral as their home, their favourite nesting-place being the mediaeval Tour de Seurre. There are also 250 bats, 60 hawks, 40 owls, and 35 ravens. As to angels, the census-taker refused to estimate them. He is certain there are thousands of them, but since they are invisible, he was unable even to make a guess as to their numher. For the most part, these winged inhabitants of Rouen Cathedral live in peace and quiet, but now and then war brealcs out between the pigeons and the hawlcs. It is a weekly occ.urrence to discover the mutilated body of a pigeon in the cathedral gardens, and the evidence indicates that the hawks were to hlame.
