SCHOOL ENTRY AGE

(Press. Assn. —

estimating extent of the probable savings

By Teleg >*s> nh— Copyrtgnt'J

WELLINGTON, Monday. The Education Department is collecting information concerning the effects of raising the school age with a view to beginning next year to gauge the decline in attendance and to what extent staff and other economies can be made. The estimate of the ' Minister of Education (Hon. R. Masters) is that the raising of the age will result in an annual saving of about £120,000. It is anticipated that many larger schools will lose two or three teachers next year as the result of the reduced roll. It is likely that the reduction of the school roll by about 40 pupils will mean the staffing being reduded by one teacher. It is learned that in the past, one in every three children joined the school in the third term of the year.
