BUSINESS BLOCIt BURNED BY EARLY MORNING BLAZE RAPID SPREAD OF FLAMES

GISBORNE, Sunday. Shortly after two o'clock this morning, the most disastrous blaze in the • history of the East Coast, occurred at Tolaga Bay, a block of buildings, containing five business premises, two offiees and an unoceupied shopj heing destroyed. Fanned by a strong breeze, the fiames spread with paralysing rapidity, and little could be done to check the blaze. The whole of the destroyed block was owned hy Mr. C. E. * Smith,' and contained the following premises: Colehrook and Taylor, general store, Mr. R. J. Knox, tailor, Mr. H. R. Littlewortl>, stationer and fancy goods merchant, Mrs P. V. Hickey-, tea rooms, Mr. C. E. Smith, insti'rance and general agent, Mr. A. G. HTolliS, solicitor, Mr. E. Kelly, billiard room. In addition to the above, the hlbck contained an empty shop and also* thesoldiers' cluh rooms. * ' The outbreak was first noticed by a party of young* men returning frorh' a dance at Gisborne.
