CHARGES MADE FOR ENTRANCE TO WHAKAREWAREWA IN 1884 ' ' NOTICE FROM PA GATE An interesting old document dealing with admission to Whakarewarewa Pa has been unearthed hy a local resident. It is in the form of a public notice by the chairman of the native committee and was posted at the gat' of the pa as far back as January 1, 1884. It reads as follows: — NOTICE All persons visiting Whakarewarewa and wishing to see the wonders of this place, and all the curative Baths and waters which consist of diferent minerals mnst remember, that the following charges will be made as under: 1. The visitors have to pay the man in charge at the toll gate when entering three shillings (including guide). 2. Persons wishing to go bathino' will have to pay one shilling per day each. 3. Persons taking up lodgings, will pay six shillings per week for the j Whares (baths free). 4. Any person, or persons breaking I up any scenery will be liable to a j penalty not to exceed five pounds. | 5. The following charges will he j made for photographers coming here j for sketching, from three pounds to | five pounds. I 6.
