FORESTRY WORKERS

CLOTHES AND BOOTS REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE REFUSED BY MR. CQATES. "FUNDS NOT AVAILABLE." Following the reeent announcement that 130 single relief workers in the Rotorua 'district would he drafted to forestry camps in the district for employment during the planting season, representations that assistance should be given the men in purchasing necessary worlcing clothing and boots were made to Mr. C. H. Clinkard, M.P., by the Rotorua Unemployed Workers' Association. It was pointed out, in the course of a deputation to Mr. Clinkard, that many of the men were without the necessary outfit to undertake work in the plantations during the winter months, and without some assistance, would be unable to purchase clothing, blankets and boots Mr. Clinkard immediately conveyed the representations to Wellington, and yesterday received the following telegram from the Minister of Em~. ployment, Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates: — ' "In reply to your telegram requesting that clothing and boots be supplied to upwards of 130 men going into forestry camps, I regret that the unemployed funds cannot be made available for this purpose, nor is the Forestry Department in a position to provide them. Possibly the local committee could make some arrangements whereby boots, etc., could be obtained from wholesale firms, and the cost recovered from the men's earnings."
