MAORI CRAFTS
WORKSHOP IN NEW SCH.OOL NOW IN FULL WORKING — ORDER EXPERT CARVER ENGAGED The workshop in the Maori Arts and Crafts School at Ohinemutu is now in full occupation. Five carvers are working steadily on timbers for the "Raukawa" meeting- house at Otaki, and it is expceted that there will Tbe work provided for several months ahead. The hoard has obtained the services of an expert adze-man, Eramiha Neke, from Te Teko, to assist tbe students in developing the techniquo of adzing. Eramiha Neke is a memher of the Ngatitara wha hapu of the Arawa tribe and worked on the carvings for the Christchurch Exhibition in 1908 and on many of the carvings in the Model Pa and the Sanatorium Grounds. His father, also, was ; a famous carver. The old-time carver had many j types of adzes which he used in the j roughing-out stages of carving, and j in the hands of experts these werej very useful tools. In fact, the clever | adze-man was able to produce pat-| terns with this tool which were spleri-| did evidences of his skill.
