The first round of the Rotorua Basketball Assoeiation's competition was completed last Saturday. Teams have now settled down for the season and a higher standard of play has resulted. In Ngongotaha v. H.S.O.S. "B" match both teams commenced short of players. From the first pass of the game both teams settled down and some good fast passing was witnessed. Ngongotaha's biggest handicap was their long high pass which was so easily intercepted by the swiftness of their oppponents. The game was very even throughout, most of the play taking the place the centre of the field. High School's two forwards found it no easy matter to avoid their three sturdy defenders and missed several, good opportunities by passing away, instead of to, their goal. The final score at the close of the game showed H.S.O.S. (B) 6, Ngongotaha 3. Referee, Mrs E. G. Guy. Waratah v. H.S.O.S. (A). These two teams, so far undefeated, provided a very exciting contest with the issue always' in doubt. High School eventually won by the narrow margin of one goal. The game was notable for the low score which was a tribute to the solid defence of both sides rather than any inability on the goal throwers' part. Old Girls were leading by two goals at half time and this was a fair indication of the trend of play. In the second half Waratah made strenuous efforts to take the lead but the strong High School defence managed to stave off many hot attacks and to a certain extent succeeded in breaking up the Waratah attacking combi nation which is usually a feature of this team's play. Play was interrupfced in the last quarter of a minute by a slight mjury to one of Waratah's players, but even after this, Waratah showed their determination to win by going straighi through the defence to score another goal bringing their total to & against High School's 6 when the final vhistle sounded.
For the winners, J. Hsdale played a solid game in the forwards and was well supported by F. Bates. G. Jones was the best- of a strong centre and of the defence H. Dawson was outstanding. For the losers, B. Vaughan played her usual heady game in the forwards and all three centres played well. M. Ford was the best of a good defence. As referee Mrs. Shearer held the balance evenly between the teams in what was a difficul; game to control. Kowhai v. Kiwi Although the score against Kiwi was exceptionally large, this team should not be discouraged. They are all new players to the game whereas some of the other teams have been playing for several seasons. There is a rnarked improvement in their play and they will eventually reap the reward of perseverance. Score: Kowhai 31, Kiwi 3. Mrs Walker was the referee. Wednesday Clubs Last Wednesday' % disappointing weather upset several of the matches in this competition, only one fuil team turning up. Apparently a large number of players fail to realise that if games are not postponed by 12 noon the team must turn up for engagement. Should a team fail to attend, and the weather "mfficisntly clear to enable game to be played, the team turning up wins by default. As this competition is late in starting it is to be hoped that such an unfortunate happening will not occur again and if the players will remember that unless a notice is posted at the "Morning Post" or "Central Boelc Shop" by 12 noon. matches will be played, there shoulcHra no difficulty in preventing it. Representative Trials If satisfactory ground accommodation can be procured an endeavour will be made to start a series of Lial games to select the representative team for the season.
