WELLINGTON, Thursday. The Postmaster-General, the Hon. Adam Hamilton, said to-day that he knev/ nothing of the question asked in the Ilouse of Commons concerning the opening of Nev/ Zealand letters, and that he was unaware of any reason when the question was being put. The postal authorities have pov/er io open letters from New Zealand, but he eould not understand why this action had been taken in Great Britain. It is thought in some quarters, that the cable message refers to money sent from New Zealand for the Irish sweepstakes, It is provided in the postal regulations that money sent for the purehase of lottery tickets may be confiscated, but it is considered that | the New Zealand postal authorities 1 v/ould not be ignorant of any move ] taken to prevent money for tickets leaving the eountry. It h well knov/n that ihe posfc office has a "black list" j in New Zealand of certain ovcrseas l addresses, to which money for lottery tickets may not be sent j According to Mr, Hamilton's statemant, however, he is unaware of any j move which wight have been taken in England to tamper with mai! matiere, 1 A reeeni cable message reported | that a q'wMion had been asked in the | British Ilouse of Commons coneern- ] ing ihe opening of mail maiter from 1 Nev/ Zealand by the postal authorities.
