MAORI LANDS
THE ARAWA SCHEMES MINISTER TO YIEW BLOCKS WITH NATIYE LEADERS MEETING OF TRIBES Oh 29th iristant - Sir Apir&ka Ngata; Native Minister, will visit Rotorua f oi' the purpose of inspetiting the vari- ' ous blocks of land which are undergoing ;developmeht hy his department. He will be a'cc'ompafiied hy Mr. Tau Henare, M.P., fbr the Nbrthern M'aori ' electorate, ahd a small p'ai'ty of leaders of the development movement in the Far North. The object of this visit is to give the northerri Maoris an idea of the kind of \Vork which is being done in . the Arawa district,
whicn extends right to the East Cape. The party will be in this district for about a week. Sir Apirana's scheme in the . Far North is being Nvorke'd upon a different system to that which exists here.
Assistance is given SiSr A. Ngata in the North to units iri regard to material ahd farm reqnirements, whereas in the Arawa district the land is first deveioped up to a productive stage hefore it is occupied by the na-, tives. The hbrthern natives develop their holdings for themselves under supervision. It is hoped that as d result of the visit of these leaders a spirit of friendly rivalry will he engendered in eorinection with these two methods of development operations ahd tireakdown the usual native tribal insularity. With this accohiplished the efforts of the Maoris to make use of their land may becohie united throughout New Zealand, irrespective of tribal differences. With all sections of the native population working together much valuable development will undoubtedly evehtuate.
