The New Ze'ajand rugby football team which will leave on Friday ' next to tour Australia, played a match against the Wellington representatives at Athletic Park tbqs^ afternoon before (a .large crowd. Weather conditions for the game werq ideal, and a spectacular display of fast back play resulted in a win for the Wellington side by 36 points to 23. Notable features of the gam,e . were the outstanding back play pf the Wellington side, the success qf the All Black forwards in the tight, and the accuracy of both sides in goal kicking. ( . . Lilburne kicked off for r the All Blacks, the bail going to N. Ball, who niade a run for Wellington, but was forced into touch at half way. The First Try. The Wellington backs were now settling down to a spectacular display, and a series of passing rushes in which Neal, Killeen, Page, and McDonald were prominent, ended ip the latter crossing the N.Z. line ten yards from the corner flag. Play settled in the Wellington territory for a time, the All Black backs eventually instituting an attack from a scrum which enabled Lilburne to hand to Caughey who scored, Solomon converting to make the seores, Wellington 15 — N.Z. 13. A fine piece of play developing among the Wellington backs saw Neal, Page, McDonald, and Tindall handle in turn, Ball receiving from the -latter to cross at the corner. Neal converted. Wellington 20 - N.Z. 13. Both sets of backs attacked m turn, N.Z. hy taking scrums instead of line outs, securing possession of the ball more regularly than their opponents. A series of movements among the Wellington backs saW the play swing swiftly across field where Ball gathered in the leather to again score. Neal was again equal to the task of converting, making the score 25—13. Wellington Forge Ahead. Wellington maintained their advantage in the second spell, Collins, the All Black fullback, being compelled to foree immediately aftei' the resumption of play. From a scrum in the N.Z. twenty-five Stiver tackled an All Black forward in possession, a passing rush between Neal, Tindall, Page, Killeen and Ball ending in the latter touching down. Neal converted. Wellington 30 — N.Z. 13. Play was held up for a time at this stage, Hore, an All Black forward, having to leave the field and being replaced hy Manchester. A good ehance of a try for N.Z. was lost when Proctor passed to Bul-loek-Douglas, who was caught in possession in a handy position, the ball going out on the Wellington twentyfive. Metcalfe was caught off side shortly afterwards, and Wellington were able to clear to the N.Z. side of half way, where they were awarded a penalty which Neal turned to good account. Wellington 33 — N.Z. 13. Wellington again attacked but Killeen was tackled by Caughey in the nick of time and the ball went out. N.Z. attacked but McDonald secured and kicked to Collins, the Wellington forwards led hy Deiderich bustling the All Black fullback, and the leather eventually going out. From the throw ixl McDonald, Stiver and McPherson took play to the N.Z. goal line, where Reed secured and crossed. Neal failed to convert. Wellington 36 — N.Z. 13. All Blacks Improve Indulging in a series of passing rushes, the All Black backs made things merry for Wellington, combined play between Kilby, Manchester, Caughey and Proctor enabling the latter to force his way over the line ten yards from the corner flag. Collins' kick hit the.crossbar and bounced over. Wellington 36— N.Z. 18. Neal had an unsUccessful attempt at a "pot" after the resumption aiid the N.Z. forwards in a dribbling rusb took piay into Wellington territory. Max broke away from a scrum, the ball travelling from Cottrell to Manchester and Clark, and back to Manchester who touched down for N.ZCollins converted. Wellington 36— N.Z. 23. . , . / . .
