"MEN LIKE THESE"
Although the tragedy of the "Poseidon" has provided the framework for the incident of "Men Like These," there is no pretence that it is a reconstruction of that episode; it would he more accurate to describe it as an epitome of the perils faced by all ranks of the submarine service; nevertheless the fact that just such a disaster happened with the "Poseidon" and was met with the same heroism gives the film a value greater than would attach, even to an ini spired piece of fiction. The production is very impressive pictorially right from its opening, featuring a flotilla of submarines leaving a shore port for service overseas; remarkable studies of battleships on a misty sea, and glimpses of sailing vessels gradually give place to an open sea and the unescorted submarines proceeding in line. Alternating shots of the interior of one of the vessels enable something of the intricate routine of steering and manipulating the ship afloat or submerged to be understood.
