MINERS CONSIDER OWNERS NOT ANXIOUS FOR CONFERENCE
— By Telegraph — Copyright).
GREYMOUTH, Monday. The coal position is unaltered. All union' mines remain idle. The miners' distTict secretary, Mr. J. Purdy, stated that the indications were that the coal owners did not desire a conference, but only to carry out their demands, whilst the Government apparehtly was shelving the issue regarding the conference, which Mr. Pu'rdy considers the puhlic as well as the miners favour. "The employers evidently would bleed 'Us white," he declares, "as the attitude they adopt is calculated to drive the miners into the position -$here they cannot riegotiate. If they won't meet the West Coast Council, we will conf er with the owners whether at Huntly or Southland or here, but we believe the West Coast the pfoper place for a conference.
