Gun Club Menibership The Rotorua Rod and Gun Club now has a membership of 150. The majority belong to Rotorua and its vieinity, hut outside districts are also fairly well represented. Railv/ay Repairs. A gang of about 20 men were engaged throughout yesterday making repairs to the railway line hetween Rotorua and Ngongotaha. All worn rails were lifted and replaced by new ones. B ©rough Road Work. Considerable road improvement is at present being carried out in the Rotorua Borough. Unemployed laou? is being used to straighten and elear up Ranolf Street north, which until recently, has been in an nntidy condition. The grader was employed on Friday in the town area in levelling the road surfaces at the side of the bitumen and building up the shoulders of the sealed stretehes. Dyraamifcrag ia Ohau Channel Poachers are reported to be operating in the Ohau Channel and during the past few days, there have been abundant evidences of dynamiting in the stream. Residents of the locality state that many dead fish have been floating in the water. Dynamiting in spawning water sueh as the channel must inevitably have a disastrous effect, and close investigations are being made by the police and rangers of the Internal Affairs Department. Deer Shooti^g. Referring to deer shooting the annual report of the Rotorua Rod and Gun Club, presented to the meeting on Thursday night, said; "On account of the open season for deer the committee could not do much with this matter. Just prior to the shooting season a {BUgg'astion was mad.e to the department to close the season and issue licehses at a fee of £1, to cover the whole district. This was considered desirable in fairness to sportsmen who had taken out licenses year after year. The suggestion, however, was not entertained. Improved Fishing. The opinion of sportsmen in the Rotorua district as expressed in the annual report of the Rotorua Rod and Gun Club, is that fishing in the lake region has considerably improved during the last two seasons. There has been no shortage of feed and the fish have been in good condition, but generally speaking have been harder to take. \ Services Appreicated. The report presented to the annual meeting of the Rotorua Rod and Gun Club on Thursday evening contained an appreciative reference to the Conservator of Fish and Game, Mr. A Kean. "Very good work was done hy his department" says the report, " in the destruction of poachers and by support in any matter that was put forwarcl bv the cluh in the interests of sport." Ocean Newspapep. A glov-ing article with regard to the thcrmal attractions of Rotorua is piiblished in "The Polynesian," the daily pauer puhlished aboard the Matson liners. The issue to hand was puhlished on hoard the Mariposa on May 24. It is a bright, chatty production, containing radio news of ihe latest current events. The article on Rotorua is illustrated by attractive phatogi'aphs of hot pools and Maoris in native costume. With poetic license the wrifcer says: "Here the naU ives live their lives as their ancestors in ages past lived; the women cook their foods in nature's boiling springs and weava their mats beneath the shade of their thatched roofs. The tribal members acknowIedge. still, the ruie of their chiefs, and bow to recelve the blessings of the tohunga. Their life is easy, made so hy nature and about their villages lie some of the world's greatest wonderlands." Fat Stock Railed. Last Saturday, on account of Mr. Pethybridge, of Tikitere, 125 bulloeks in prime condition were railed to Westfield Freezing Works. The stock brought top market price. They were fatted on Mr. Pethybridge's run at Tikitere where anothsr 300 bulloeks are being grazed at the present time. Primary School Football Eugby football matches played last week under the jurisdiction of the Rotorua Primary Schools Football Asrociation, resulted: Rotorua A defeated Rotorua B, 19 points — nil. Haimona scored three tries, Price and Hill one each. and Andrews eonverted two. • Mr. •Cruickshank refereed. In a closelv contested game, Whaka defeated Ngongotaha by six to nil, W eriri scoring both tries. Mr. Mason refereed. As a result oi Convent plaving a boy who was overweight in their game against Ngongotaha, the match was subsequently awarded to Ngongotaha.
