BASKETBALL

LAST WEEK'S GAMES HIGH SCHOOL OLD GIRLS B CLOSE WIN OVER KOWHAI FIXTURES FOR TO-MORROW To-morrow's basketball matches, which will close the first round of the Rotorua Basketball Association's competition, are as follows: — The game between Waratah and H.S.O.G. (A) should prove most exciting, both teams being so far unbeaten and very keen to win. To-morrow's Fixtures Ngongotaha v. H.S.O.G. (B), 1.45 p.m. Referee, Mrs. E. G. Guy. Waratah v. H.S.O.G. (A), 2.30. Referee, Mrs. Sheerer. Kiwi v. Kowhai, 3.15 p.m. Referee, Mrs Walker. Kowhai v. H.S.O.G. (B) Kowhai commenced briskly against High School, gaining three goals in quick succession. This made High School concentrate more carefully, and after settling down and attacking strongly they often gained possession of the ball, sending it swiftly down to their forwards, who soon contrived to even the score to three all. Following this the game beeame fast and even, and both teams' defence were kept busy. Kowhai's score, however, gradually crept ahead, and they managed to lead by two goals until the half-time whistle. The two Kowhai centres, D. Emeny and B. Dorset, played sterling games, but missed the assistance of their third, E. Hardy, who was replacing a forward. Although in a strange position this player, assisted by D. Thompson, played an excellent game, and was responsible for several of Kowhai's goals. In the second half both teams went to it with a will. Kowhai managed to add still another two goals to their lead, and it appeared as if they must win. The High School defenders were now playing an even stronger game, however, and kept the Kowhai forwards well guarded. As time drew near the pace seemed a little too fast for Kowhai, and their opponents' score gradually crept up goal by goal to even, and then one ahead of their opponents. The final whistle gave High School the game by the small margin of one goal. H.S.O.G. (B) 18, Kowhai 17. Referee, Mrs. Sheerer. H.S.O.G. (A) v. Kiwi This game was very scrappy with an excess of penalties. Kiwi are gradually improving, and are still very keen, but as previously advised, they should do their utmost to obtain sound coaching. It would be to their advantage if they obtained a rule book as there are still a few points on which they are not sure. Score: H.S.O.G. (A) 26, Kiwi nil. Referee, Mrs. E. G. Guy. Ngongotaha v. Waratah Waratah again added a win to their credit, defeating Ngongotaha by 23 goals to 2. At the beginning of the season Ngongotaha had a very strong team, but unfortunately they have since lost some of their best players. They have a strong centre and defence, but their forwards require constant practice in goal-throwing. Last week they seemed too light against Waratah's strong defence. Waratah have an excellent combination and take their game very seriously. K. Kingon, who has this season made a return to basketball, played well, and more should be heard of this player. Mrs. Sheerer was the referee. Wednesday's Games The Wednesday competition was late in starting, and under present circumstances may have to be confined to two rounds only. Later in the season an endeavour will be made to obtain visiting teams to play a Rotorua representative team. Every consideration will be given those girls not having an opportunity to enter for the Saturday games. Play will have to improve, however, or these girls will not be placed. Some of the games last week were very poor. There was far too much laughing and chatting on the field going on between the players, and not enough interest being taken in the game. Results Tui 5, Konini 21. Mokoia 2, Waratah T4. Konini 7, High School (B) 12. Ngaio 8, High School (A) Notes Two important rules were much in evidence last weelc, but unfortunately more through the breach than the observance of them. Bouncing the Ball: The ball may be bounced downwards or batted upwards with one hand and caught by the same player to gain possession. The ball once held in both hands cannot fcfb deliberately bounced. Personal Contact: A player cannot legally come into personal contact with an opponent in such a way as to interfere with the game, i.e., holding a girl back, elb owing, etc. Seven-a-Side Tourney On Friday June 3, the association staged a seven-a-side basketball tourney. This is the first occasion such an event has taken place in Rotorua and it drew a big entry of teams. The ! High School teams made their debut in open competition play, and reached the semi-final where they went under to the strong Kowhai team. The final was played between Kowhai and Waratah and resulted in a very good exhibition. The result was a victory for Waratah by a two goal margin.
